Offline Messages in Google Talk

Yes folks it’s true. Google Talk now finally supports Offline Messaging (Official Blog Entry). Let’s just hope that the uber cool Google Chat emoticons are also ported into GTalk.

If you send somebody an Offline Message via Google Talk, the message will be received when they sign into Google Talk/Gmail. In Google Talk it appears as a normal message from a friend, whereas in Gmail it appears as a new Message.

OH yes there’s a catch. You only get this feature when you use Google Talk with a Gmail Account and that too with Save Chat History Enabled. Also if you were chatting off the record before your friend went offline, you’ll need to select Stop chatting off the record before sending offline messages.

Google Ads == Phishing Attacks!!!

Google ADs = Phishing!!!Just as usual I turned ON my PC; updated definitions on my Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 6.0 and proceeded to check my e-mails, blogs, and all the regular stuff.

As soon as I opened my blog page I got this alert. The first ever Phishing attack notification and was surprised by the url it was giving the alert for.

The url was none other than that of Google Ads, and that’s what really shocked me. At first I thought it was a one off incident, but strangely I got this alert for all the sites I visited that sport Google Ads. The alert for some strange reasons are appearing on a some sites and not on others, (The alerts appears for sure when I refresh the page). Also its not like these are some strange sites, but they are the ones I visit daily and there was nothing just 12 hrs. ago(e.g. Frihost, Digg, Think Digit, CNN-IBN, etc.)

But still if Kaspersky thinks Google Ads are Phishing attacks then it should really mean something and hope they sort it out. (Just hoping its a false alert or some screw-up with the latest definitions). I trust Google and would not like this to happen.

Update (24 July 2006): It looks like Kaspersky has got stuck obssessed with showing Google ADs as phishing attacks, which in all cases is certainly a False Positive. SO I have now altogether disabled its Anti-Phishing alets. As it is I dont need that service because I know what sites I am looking at and what I am doing online.

Ubuntu 6.06 CDs Received

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS I got my Ubuntu CDs yesterday deliverd to my door step a month after I had ordered them, and touch wood without any trouble. Although I must salute the postman who delivered these to me in the worst rainfall of the year.

As soon as yoou open the packet you notice that now we dont have 2 seperate CDs (One Live and One Install) but they are now one. You just have to boot up the live cd and then install it from there. The installation was a breeze.

The other good thing is its usability and ease of use. The manuall installation (non synaptic installation) is now so so simple that you will never have to touch the terminal for such trivial stuff. The other thing worth mentioning is the UI. Not a big leap but well and truly now at par with XP and in some cases better than XP.

The end result has been that I am now going to shift to full time to Ubuntu and just leave my Windows XP partition to Login to my ISP and play Games (Remeber I got more RAM, so now I can play games)

Now I am waiting for my Kubuntu CDs which I had ordered a week after I had ordered the Ubuntu CDs. Just hope the guys at the customs department dont mess up again.

Here’s the details to get your copy.

Update: I have received my kubuntu and edubuntu cds. The only thing this time around other than a larger packet was that the packet was almost open and there were no ubuntu stickers that came with the ubuntu cds earlier. So at the end the customs did steal my stickers.

Opera 9 Final Released!!!

Opera today has released the final version of its desktop browser, Opera 9.

Opera 9 presents a significant upgrade over previous versions of the browser in both features and more importantly better site compatibility.

Some of the notable new features introduce in Opera 9 include Content blocking (A.K.A An ad blocker), Widgets, BitTorrent support, and Site-specific preferences (See Opera 9 screenshots here).

Opera Widgets are small applications — such as multimedia, games, utility programs, newsfeeds, and more – the run on the desktop outside the browser. Widgets have proven popular with Yahoo’s Konfabulator and Apple’s Dashboard Widgets; Google too recently released Desktop widgets with Google Desktop.

The new content blocker allows you to block various kinds of content, such as ads, from being displayed in the browser. Though the new Content Blocker sports the same functionality of an Ad Blocker, Opera was careful not to name it an Ad Blocker as many ad-displaying sites would block Opera users.

Bit Torrent support also made its way in the browser, after being released in previous preview and beta versions. With Opera’s BitTorrent support, downloading a torrent file is just like downloading a regular file.

I Got Microsoft Office 2007 Beta2 Running

OH yes I did get Microsoft Office 2007 Beta2 running on my 6 year old PC with a meagre 64 MB RAM. And the best part is that I find it running more efficiently and faster than Office 2003, that’s really commendable to Microsoft for not making Office 2007 a bloat ware. But still the apps are a bit slow in some places and I think that’s acceptable on a PC with 1/4th the RAM than required.

The new User Interface (UI) in Office 2007 is really cool, makes life very easy. But unfortunately Microsoft hasn’t added the new UI to all the applications. Its just available in Excel, PowerPoint, Word & composing part of Outlook. OneNote is the place where this UI is sorely missed. Microsoft says it will add this new UI in the next office release, which essentially means Office13 and that means at least 4 years.
